Typography, altering the 'spacing'

Adjusting a text layers spacing can make ordinary text a little bit more interesting. Once you have gotten the hang of working with the 'Character' window, it will be second nature for you to adjust the spacing. For this tutorial I will be showing you how we can change some 'normal' text into some 'adjusted text'.

1. After opening up your file, go to Windows > Character. And a little box will come up called Character. This is your gateway to changing text.

2. Once you have typed out something, highliight it, click on the character window and choose the option which is marked '0' next to a symbol of an 'AV'. To make text seem squashed/squeezed together, we put a negative number instead of '0', the greater the negative number the less space between text. So I am going to go for -70. It might be a good idea to alter the text's size as well, so play around with the font size until it looks good. I decided to make the word 'typography' more bolder so I made the size bigger.

3. So we have learnt how to make text squeeze together, to make them space out. All we do is add a positive number instead of a negative. I've changed the word 'typography' into uppercase letters and put the value as '200' so it's really spaced out.

4. Lastly if you want to decrease or increase the space above and below text, you have to alter a different option, edit the value where it says 'Auto' next to the symbol of an 'A' on top of another 'A'. Play around with this to see how much space you want to reduce or increase (I've changed mine to 16 pt).
